Rožňava Swimming Pool
ATRIUM ARCHITECTURES Recent years have brought several interesting sports projects to Košice. Among them, for example, the National Training Center or the Košice Football Arena. However, interesting projects are not only being created in the eastern metropolis. One example is the upcoming project for a new swimming pool in Rožňava.
The Košice Self-Governing Region (KSK) has been working on the Rožňava Swimming Pool project since 2024. At that time, the region concluded a contract for engineering and processing of project documentation with the architectural studio Atrium Architekti. The building is to be built on the premises of the Secondary Vocational School of Trade and Services in Rožňava. In addition to the construction of a completely new swimming pool, it also includes the reconstruction of the existing sports hall.
„With our solution, we followed the volume and mass of the school building. We respected the school's building boundary, as it were, and in this line, we put together the swimming pool building next to the school building, along with a connecting link to which we connected the existing gym,“ explains Michal Burák from the Atrium Architekti studio. „In the connecting neck, a space was created for the main entrance to the sports zone,“ he adds.
FOR STUDENTS AND THE PUBLIC
From a functional point of view, the project includes a 25-meter swimming pool with six lanes, a small children's pool, a gym, and complete locker and hygiene facilities, including space for coaches and referees during the competition. Of course, there is also an auditorium with seating for spectators. A smaller wellness area with a sauna, a cooling pool, and a tepidarium will also be added.
The new indoor swimming pool will be a school sports facility, but its use will not be limited to students. „The facility will also serve the general public not only from Rožňava, but also from surrounding municipalities. The aim is to create a modern sports center that will be accessible to different age categories and support a healthy lifestyle in the region,“ the region states. According to the Košice Self-Governing Region, the project also includes the use of modern technologies, especially in the areas of water treatment, energy efficiency and air conditioning, so that the operation is ecological and economically sustainable. A photovoltaic power plant will be installed on the roof of the facility, which will contribute to reducing energy consumption.
WOODEN BUILDING WITH VIEWS TO THE SURROUNDINGS
According to the architects, the proposed extension will reach a built-up area of 2,525 m2. From an architectural perspective, Michal Burák from Atrium Architects describes it as a rectangular mass levitating above a distinctive glass facade with a main entrance. “The school building is built of rectangular masses that mutually create an inner atrium with a school yard. Later, a gym was added to the main building, creating another yard,” he describes the current state. The existing buildings have a built-up area of 806 m2. “Our solution underlines these yards and adds another sports function. In front of the building, we have also expanded the space for additional leisure sports activities, along with outdoor seating with a micro grandstand and a children’s playground,” he adds. The new swimming pool building will be a wooden structure. „As for the facade, a glass facade is applied to half the height of the hall. Above this height, the space is shaded by a protruding perforated structure,“ Burák says. The project also includes landscaping. It concerns the school's forecourt and the area to the side of the swimming pool. The greenery will eventually cover 8,925 m2. The exterior sports areas will cover another 215 m2. New parking areas will also be created around the building, which, together with roads and paved areas, will reach an area of more than 3,700 m2. The exterior parking spaces will be located in the more distant part of the forecourt of the new swimming pool. WHEN WILL CONSTRUCTION START? *********************** The architects estimate the total duration of the project at 30 months. However, they have not been able to say when the actual construction will begin. „After obtaining a valid zoning decision, we are currently preparing for the next stages of project documentation,“ they added in conclusion. The project for a new swimming pool in Rožňava represents a significant investment in the sports infrastructure of the region, which will bring modern facilities for recreational and competitive swimming. In addition to the swimming pool itself, it will also offer additional sports and relaxation functions, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and high-quality architectural solutions. Combined with the renovation of the existing school premises, a comprehensive sports complex will be created serving the general public.
