Sport center Under the Bridge

The unused area under the bridge which we have decided to revitalize as a part of the project Košice – The European City of Culture 2013 had been used mainly by homeless and those who are socially inadaptable. The absence of public light, social and cultural use gradually changed this area with a great potential into a degraded public space. The near proximity of tennis courts, bike-cross centre, the connection to public transport and the pedestrian and cycle path leading under the bridge have inspired us to turn this space into cultural and sports area. As a part of the urban intervention project www.zasahy.sk , we have designed a massive climbing wall (boulder) attached to the already existing concrete pillars of the bridge with a connection to the outdoor amphitheatre, skate centre, summer cinema and a dance zone. We have invited the Italian design group Esterni to cooperate with us and since our budget was very limited we have decided to realize only the partial aims of the project. In this stage we succeeded in creating amphitheatre sitting on the slope of the bridge, urban zone for dancing, skate area and multifunctional wooden stage with a bar, space for DJs, movie screening. At the moment, the area is living its own new cultural life.
